SUMMARY:Mushrooms of El Dorado County and Beyond by Mike Davis
DESCRIPTION:A brief overview of mushrooms will be discussed\, including how they are identified\, the countless ways they are essential to life on Earth\, and why specific species occur in certain areas like forests\, pastures\, and gardens. Mushrooms commonly encountered in local areas and those potentially toxic to humans and pets will be emphasized. \nSee the attachment\, Mushroom Medicinal Value. \nMike Davis is a retired Professor and Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Department of Plant Pathology at UC Davis\, where he taught plant pathology classes as well as courses on mushroom identification\, cultivation\, and phylogeny. Most of his research was focused on environmentally sound applications of disease management measures of fungal diseases of field crops and vegetables\, including mushrooms. He has written popular articles and technical papers on mushrooms\, including descriptions of several new species. He is the lead author of Field Guide to Mushrooms of Western North America published in 2012.

SUMMARY:Gold Rush History Through Music by Alan Fuller
DESCRIPTION:Many songs were written and sung by miners during the California Gold Rush.  The songs were presented in small theaters\, sometimes tents\, usually on Saturday nights.  The audiences were the miners themselves.  The songs\, written by men who had found gold mining too demanding\, are often funny\, provocative\, and descriptive.   They provide personal views into the triumphs and the failures of men in those tumultuous times. \nAlan\, an accomplished musician and performer\, presents the songs and helps the listeners to learn new aspects of gold-rush history through the music. \nAlan Fuller is a retired State Park Ranger\, a naturalist\, historian\, musician\, and actor.  He has called Placerville his home for 45 years.  As a ranger at Sutter’s Mill he presented countless public talks to park visitors\, covering many topics.  He has also presented authentic gold-rush songs in many programs and locations.  He has won numerous awards from California state government\, from local historical preservation agencies\, and for his work on the stage.  Two of Alan’s gold-rush songs were included in the Ken Burns PBS production “The West” in 1996.  He has organized live historic music at “living history” presentations at Sutter’s Mill since his retirement 25 years ago.

SUMMARY:America's Home Grown Religions
DESCRIPTION:The vast majority of American religious groups (with the exception of Native American tribes) can trace their roots to Europe\, Asia\, or the Middle East. But in mid-Nineteenth Century America\, amid new developments in Protestant theology\, health\, diet\, science\, spirituality\, and lifestyle\, three influential Americans founded new “home grown” religious communities that still thrive in America and here in El Dorado County today. It’s pretty rare that one male and two female New Englanders from the same era (Joseph Smith\, born 1805\, Mary Baker Eddy\, born 1821\, and Ellen Gould White\, born 1826) would go on to establish what we now call the Mormons\, the Christian Scientists\, and the Seventh Day Adventists respectively.   We’ll examine their personalities\, ideas\, teachings\, and texts\, aided by a richly illustrated PowerPoint slide show.  We’ll also explore the Jehovah’s Witnesses and their founder and “Watchtower” publisher Charles Taze Russell..
